What is wrong with Christianity in North America? Sixteen days ago (when I wrote this) someone walked into a nightclub and shot a whole lot of members of the LGBT community. The outpouring of love and support that came immediately afterwards was refreshing to see, but…
I recently had the pleasure to do something I’ve never done, I attended the ordination of an old friend of mine. We met in high school (Catholic,) attended the same youth group (Reformed) with another friend who later became a (Presbyterian) minister. Long time readers will know that I pastored a small, Baptist church in […]
Alberta is burning. The Fort McMurray wildfire has engulfed a huge area surrounding the city. The fire has destroyed, according to reports, about 2,400 homes and other structures, and displaced 90,000 people. It’s a national tragedy the scale of which, at least in terms of size and economic loss if not (thankfully) loss of life, […]
Dear Right-Wing Christian Brothers and Sisters, Please forgive me, but it’s about time someone calls you out on your nonsense. I’ve tried to stay out of it. I’ve wanted to stay out of it! After all, I’m Canadian, and none of this really applies to me; at least not yet. Besides, what can I add […]
I may not be a pastor anymore, but I still primarily work with people. As a result, occasionally I get to hear gems like this: “Man, if climate change worked the other way [and made the world colder] we’d have had this whole thing figured out decades ago!” More than just a funny interaction that made me […]

I’ve been thinking and writing a bit on the topic of doctor assisted suicide or euthanasia in Canada lately. I’ve also been waiting for the inevitable evangelical reaction. Not the crazy reaction. that one came out months ago. Alarmists are almost always the first out of the gate. No, I’ve been waiting for the thoughtful, […]
A few weeks ago I was honoured to be the guest preacher at another church. As the service ended I realized that in one morning I had seen a great example of unity amongst different churches.
The biggest blessing and curse of my life was growing up in church. There may be a bit of hyperbole there, but there’s a point. I have been going to church nearly every Sunday since before I was born. I was saved… somewhere around the age of three. Needless to say, there has been no […]
After last year’s Supreme Court ruling, Canada is set to draft and implement new legislation legalizing euthanasia in Canada. This post isn’t to debate the morality or the merit of death with dignity/Doctor assisted suicide. My goal is, rather, to describe how we as church leaders, and members ought to respond to our new shared reality.
